Board of Advisors RON TREMPER Ron Tremper is no stranger to innovation. In a herpetocultural career spanning 40 years and counting, Tremper has designed a zoo's reptile house, first made several captive-bred hobbyist favorites available to the U.S. public and originated most of the leopard gecko morphs. This reptile renaissance man became interested in turtles and tortoises at the age of 6. As a teenager in the 1960s, Tremper kept reptiles but did not breed them. He said nobody really knew how to breed them at that point. He frequented Fresno's Chaffee Zoological Gardens, then known as the Roeding Park Zoo, where he did volunteer work from 1967 to 1971. In 1993, Tremper and his wife, Marilyn, relocated to Boerne, Texas, where they built a large breeding facility, the Center for Reptile and Amphibian Propagation. They are into their 29th generation of leopard geckos, and also produced large numbers of bearded dragons, rosy boas, sand boas and chameleons. For young hobbyists wanting to make their reptile passion into a career, Tremper advised them to do their homework and find a mentor early. RALF SOMMERLAD Ralf Sommerlad is an international herpetologist and conservationist hailing from Frankfurt, Germany, with a considerable background in European zoology and herpetoculture. He is a member of the IUCN/SSC Crocodile Specialist Group, DGHT, and director of the Madras Crocodile Bank and Centre for Herpetology in India. He co-authored, with noted herpetologist Ludwig Trutnau, the distinguished volume, Crocodilians: Their Natural History & Captive Husbandry, in 2006.
